Here are the Answers to Some of Your Frequently Asked Questions!
"I am Moving into/out of Town, What do I need to do?"
When moving into or out of town, please call or stop by the city clerk's office at (319)987-2905 to set up or cancel your utility account. A deposit may be required when setting up your account.

"When is Garbage Day?"
"Garbage Day" is Thursday.
Garbage and Recycling Toters must be placed at curb/street side prior to 4:00 a.m. on collection day with the lid completely closed. Specially marked bags and stickers, for garbage in excess of your toter, may be purchased at the City Clerk's Office or Janesville Library for $2.00 each.

Why wasn't my garbage picked up?
The lid on your garbage toter must be closed or it will not be picked up. For extra refuse, you can call city hall (319)987-2905 to make arrangements to purchase specially marked bags, for garbage for $2.00 each.

"How and when can I dispose of yard waste"
-Yard Waste to be collected by city personnel must be placed in biodegradable garbage bags and/or tied in bundles weighing no more than thirty pounds (30#) each.
-If you prefer to haul your yard waste to the city's yard waste site, you must make prior arrangements with city personnel as the site cannot be accessed without their assistance.
-Yard waste may also be burned on private property outside of school hours. (8:00am-3:30pm)

"When is my water bill due?"
Water bills are sent on or about the 15th of each month and are due by the 5th of the following month. Payable by Cash or Check, payments can be mailed to City Hall (P.O. Box 146), or be placed in the drop box on the South door of the City Clerk's office. Auto Pay is also available to all city residents.

"Where do I pay my traffic tickets and moving violations?" Most Speeding tickets and moving violations issued by Janesville Police Officers can be paid at the Bremer County Courthouse, Clerk of Court (across from Kwik Star East) in Waverly IA. (319)352-5661.
**Occasionally tickets will be referred to Black Hawk County or a different department. Specific instructions are listed on the top or back of each ticket**

"What is the phone number for the Post Office?"

"I'm trying to reach the Police Department/Fire Department/First Responders, What is their phone number?"
The Janesville Police/Fire/First Responder departments do not hold regular office hours, For Emergencies Call 911. For non-emergencies it is best to call the Bremer-Waverly Law Center at (319)352-5400 Ext. 3 and they can relay a message to the appropriate department.

"When are City Wide Garage Sales?"
The City Wide Garage Sales are typically help the last Saturday in April and September. This fundraiser is organized and facilitated solely by the Janesville Public Library.

"Who is in Charge of the Cemetery?"
Oakland Cemetery is not within the city limits and is not a department or entity of the City of Janesville. Walt Ruth is the caretaker and can be contacted at

"Who do I call if there is a Power Outage?"
In the event of a power outage, please call Mid American Energy at 888-427-5632 to report the outage. DO NOT call the law center to report an outage. If you have an emergency caused by the outage, then call 911.

"Where can I take my empty cans to recycle?"
The Fire Department is accepting empty can donations to help raise money for the department. There are 3 bright red drop off bins through out town, They are located at, 1. West Side of Kwik Star. 2. Corner of 2nd and Chestnut. 3. Riviera Event Center near the garage.
